History [ edit] Dumbleyung's name is of Noongar origin, coming from "Dambeling" which possibly means "large lake or inland sea" (although another source suggests it came from "dumbung", a game played with bent sticks and a hard piece of fruit. [2] The lake nearby was discovered and named Dambeling Lake by explorers Henry Landor and Henry Maxwell Lefroy in 1843, and the current spelling was used by surveyors in the 1860s and 1870s. [3] Pastoralists and sandalwood cutters moved into the area, initially settling at Nippering, north of Lake Dumbleyung and 10 kilometres (6 mi) west of the present town.

The town is situated in the Mtubatuba Local Municipality in the Umkhanyakude District. It was established in a swampland of reeds and papyrus in 1903 and named after the local Zulu chief. The town's early years were hampered by flooding. An additional setback occurred during World War I: a ship carrying essential parts of what was to be the town's first sugar mill was torpedoed. The mill was eventually constructed in 1916 at nearby Riverview. The town is approximately 27 km from St Lucia town. Canberra Nature Park is made up of 39 nature reserves in and around urban Canberra, with environments ranging from forested hills to some of the best examples of lowland native grassland and critically endangered Yellow Box-Red Gum Grassy Woodland left in Australia. The ACT Parks and Conservation Service (PCS) is responsible for managing Canberra Nature Park. The grasslands, woodlands and forests of Canberra Nature Park are rich ecosystems with many species of regional and national conservation significance. Canberra Nature Park reserves are home to rare and threatened species such as the Superb Parrot, White Winged Triller, Striped Legless Lizard, Grassland Earless Dragon, Canberra Spider Orchid and Button Wrinklewort, and form valuable wildlife corridors, supporting the movement of wildlife through urban Canberra and into the broader region. Canberra Nature Park also provides an extraordinary opportunity for low-key recreation in a natural environment, close to residential areas. Most Canberrans reside within walking distance of a Canberra Nature Park reserve where they can explore quiet grasslands, walk through woodlands filled with birdsong, or hike to the summits of Canberra's ridges and peaks to enjoy an eagle-eye view over the ACT region.
