Travelfish says: Which beach? Unlike on larger islands where long distances might separate one beach from another, location is less of an issue on Lipe. Keep extremes in mind—like eastern Pattaya Beach for nightlife and the western coves for seclusion—while choosing mainly on the merits of accommodation quality rather than location. Also check out Beaches on Ko Lipe for detailed profiles of each of them.

When my friend, Valentina, tipped the woman at the laundry shop (as opposed to using our foreign-owned hotel's laundry service), I asked why she did so, since tipping is not customary in Asia. She told me what's just one Euro for her may go a long way for the shopkeeper. Every time we walked by the shop, thereafter, that woman greeted Valentina with a smile. Perhaps it was a smile that said, finally, someone who acknowledges and appreciates the cost of opening up our home to you.
A quick word of warning – if you want to dip your toes in the sand, you may want to keep your shoes on. Stonefish have been spotted in the waters here. While it is a slim chance, the stonefish sting is extremely painful and potentially lethal. Best to just keep your toes covered for your dip. If you are so inclined to pay your respects to the Thai culture, there is a small Buddhist temple in the center of the island. Activities You may be inclined to take a relaxing fishing trip, but remember fishing is illegal in Ko Lipe. Do not join any trips, and do not buy any locally caught fish. A very popular, and very legal activity, though, is diving. The reefs around Ko Lipe are mostly intact since the 2004 tsunami. Some of the best reefs in Thailand are easily accessible from Ko Lipe. The 8 Mile Rock is a challenge for even experienced divers given the currents, but the underwater critters and birds that feed here are magnificent. The Hin Takorn Dukong is a spectacular reef that's home to every color and type of fish you can dream up.

The food scene is exceptional and a clutch of bars present a more mature nightlife alternative to Ko Phi Phi, without the seediness found on parts of Phuket. You can still score bungalows for less than 1, 000 baht and there's a strong selection of midrange to upscale digs. Group or private boat tours make it easy to snorkel and dive around 21 other islands in the surrounding archipelago. Not that Pattaya. Photo: David Luekens Lipe was virtually unknown in the 1980s and drew only trickles of adventurous Western travellers through the turn of the millennium, when forest blanketed almost the entire island. Mainstream tourism finally caught up in the late 2000s—and from then on Lipe developed remarkably fast. Large numbers of visitors now come from China, Malaysia and Thailand itself, with big groups of moneyed Thais filing in on weekends.

For weeks, my Google history was littered with searches like "What island in Thailand is best" and "What Thailand island should I go to" and "Thailand island ranking???? " I decided to focus my efforts in the Andaman Sea, knowing I would eventually be flying out of the conveniently located Phuket. The Instagram-famous Phi Phi Islands seemed like a no-brainer. And, a friend convinced me to take some time in the low-key Koh Lanta. But, after visiting six islands in two weeks, I can say that my favorite island has been one that wasn't even on my original schedule. I added Koh Lipe to the list of destinations last minute, after rerouting my trip due to coronavirus. And, I could not be happier with my decision. Koh Lipe is the kind of place that feels like it should only exist on Instagram, with white beaches and electric blue water that is more striking in person than in photos. The sunrises and sunsets were borderline spiritual experiences. The island is manageable in size, easy to navigate, deeply relaxing, and an easy starting point for more island hopping.

Please call me Flower Princess The sun rises between the two islands across from Koh Lipe, silhouetting everything in sight. The clouds resemble those in Renaissance paintings, the silver linings dramatizing each poof's formation, and hang heavy over the islands. It's impossible to tell from this photo how huge and heavy those clouds are It's worth rising early for this view! On the other end of Walking Street is Pattaya Beach. With its long stretch of velvety white sand and crystal clear waters, it's the kind of beach that comes as the default background of a new computer. The water is so salty and calm that you can fall asleep while floating. But please don't do that! Especially when a storm is looming in the distance. Normally, boats dock on Pattaya Beach but because it was the rainy season, all the longtail boats were on the other side of the island, leaving an unobstructed view of the Andaman Sea. When the sun sets, which is as early as 6 pm (when I was there in June), people migrate to this side of the island for happy hour.

The trip to Koh Lipe will always be that time I vacationed with friends. I can recommend a hotel, point out the best beaches, and give you tips on how to get there. But I am unable to tell you who calls this tiny island home or how it came to be part of Thailand. I spent a week in Koh Lipe blissfully ignorant of the cost that made my vacation possible. Children racing toy boats made out of styrofoam!!! I didn't do any research before my trip. I didn't know that the island was home to the Chao Ley people. I had never heard of the Chao Ley. I didn't know that they were "people of the sea" made up of three tribes that have been roaming the Andaman Sea for the last millennium. Or, that they have been inhabiting Koh Lipe long before Thailand was even a nation. I didn't know that land continues to be grabbed from them; that resorts encroach their beachfront villages, forcing them inland into tiny settlements. I didn't know that the Chao Ley were stateless until recently, and that still, some don't have Thai citizenship.
