We stayed in Taupo for two nights at < Huka Falls Resort > which was a budget-friendly 50 dollars a night. Situated on a vineyard, it features free laundry facilities, a pool, and free parking. It was a great bargain accommodation for this area. You may want to consider renting the larger units with a kitchen if you want to save money by cooking your meals. High-end wine with a low-cost lunch! It's the budget-savvy traveler way! At Huka Falls we enjoyed picnics in the vineyard with lovely mountain views! Tip – We ran out of time to do so and it was chilly during our stay, but there is a free spa thermal park at the Riverbank Recreational and Scenic Reserve that is highly ranked on TripAdvisor. Don't pay at the other thermal pools when you can get the same experience for free! It's not often that travelers would recommend a fast-food restaurant, but consider a stop at one of the world's coolest McDonald's in Taupo. Its claim to fame is a decommissioned DC 3 airplane coming out of the front of the restaurant where visitors are welcome to dine inside of!

Created with Sketch. Adventure The North Island is filled with surprising contrasts: from the idyllic Coromandel where you can soak in a hot pool dug in the sand, venture through a geothermal wonderland of geysers, take a side-trip to Middle Earth-esque countryside, have underground adventures in caves lit by glow worms, and admire lush rainforests and even a volcanic desert – you'll be amazed by it all. This small-group guided New Zealand North Island tour will visit Coromandel, Rotorua, Taupō, and Wellington, with the option to visit Hobbiton, Waitomo Glowworm Caves and the Tongariro Crossing along the way. You can choose to travel from Auckland through to Wellington, or take the reverse itinerary. As with all our tours, we do include a few 'must-do' events including a Māori cultural night and traditional Māori hāngī dinner cooked in an underground oven. You'll see a massive range of optional activities available to add to this New Zealand North Island tour package, from bungy jumping and white water rafting to canopy forest zipline tours and scenic flights.
